Ulysses Klaw

Ulysses Klaw

Who is Ulysses Klaw?

Ulysses Klaue is a murderer, mercenary and warlord with a particular obsession with Wakanda, the royal family of that country and with vibranium. Ulysses is the son of a Nazi colonel and descendant of the first European who tried to unsuccessfully colonise the African kingdom of Wakanda in the nineteenth century.

When the Bilderberg Club has its eye on Wakanda and its enormous wealth, and above all on its huge and unique Vibranium mines, Ulysses is the one chosen to kill T’Chaka, King of Wakanda and father of T’Challa (Black Panther) if he refuses to grant exploitation rights for the material. As a proud man and King of the richest and most socially and technologically advanced country in the world, he flatly refuses and is killed by Ulysses, although T’Challa manages to protect the rest of the royal family.

Ulysses is then made prisoner of the Belgian secret services (in Marvel Belgium has a secret service) who experiment with him and amputate an arm, replacing it with a sonic claw. After 10 years of confinement he manages to escape and being neither stupid or lazy, he returns to conquer Wakanda with his sonic powers and an army of mercenaries.

As usually happens to mid-level villains in Marvel, he receives a royal beating by T’Challa and the Fantastic 4. Even so, during the battle he becomes a creature made of pure sound which multiplies his powers. In the Marvel Universe he has been dedicated to crime for his whole life and his role is to represent all the evil of colonisers and exploiters of the riches of the Third World, and he certaintly accomplishes that.

Personalidad de Ulysses Klaw

Klaue is not a complex character, he is not a villain who sometimes behaves well or has internal conflicts. He is wicked, full of hatred and ruthless, and is willing to kill anyone who stands in his way.

For him, half-measures are not worth it and represent all the bad things that ambition, power and the craving for recognition can do to a person. It is ultimately doubtful whether he is still a human being or merely a creature dedicated to hatred and vengeance.

Amigos y Enemigos de Ulysses Klaw

Like many villains, Klaue has no friends, but he does have regular collaborators.  He seldom leads his own teams and is usually recruited by more powerful villains than himself. For example, he is part of the Masters of Evil, recruited by Ultron to confront the Avengers and works with an extradimensional race, the Sheenarians, in order to help them invade the earth in exchange for Vibranium, such is his obsession.

He is also part of the Fearsome 4, a group recruited by the Magician, with Hydro Man and Titania to fight the Fantastic 4.

Ulysses Klaw en el Universo Cinemático de Marvel

One of the many important features of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that from the beginning both Marvel and Disney have opted for talent in every aspect of the productions.  The directors, whether confirmed or not, have the creative freedom to do their work and a producer such as Kevin Feige who develops the master plan, but above all very good actors in all possible roles. Although he may seem a less important villain, the casting of Andy Serkis, famous for his work as Gollum, as Ulysses Klaue tends to indicate that he will probably play an important role in the MCU.

After a brief, but intense debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he becomes the official supplier of Vibranium for Ultron – which ends up costing him his arm – and the inclusion of Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, it was clear that Wakanda was to appear sooner or later and that Klaue would play a pivotal role in the Black Panther movie. Judging by the trailer it seems that Klaue  (along with Killmonger) will be played by Michel B. Jordan, the main antagonist in a film that once again promises to overcome all the barriers seen so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

¿Qué poderes tiene Ulysses Klaw?

Although he looks to be no more than a man, after his clash with Black Panther and the Fantastic 4, Klaue turns into a being based on energy, and therefore has superhuman abilities. After being an efficient but not too prominent criminal, he becomes a being no longer limited by human weaknesses such as sleep or hunger, and can be cut up without dying.

In addition, through his sonic claw he is capable of generating sonic waves and even animals built from sonic energy, such as gorillas or dinosaurs. His ability to absorb energy is well understood, but since he is made of energy, he seems to be able to absorb it and send it back magnified.

#EnPocasPalabras: Una conclusión de Ulysses Klaw

Ulysses Klaue is a caricature. A caricature of the European colonisers who carved up Africa on the basis of lines on a map and who, according to Marvel’s vision of Wakanda, prevented Africa from becoming the paradise that with its people and resources it was destined to be.

Although somewhat simplistic and naïve, the caricature has some truth and does accurately represent the eurocentric mentality, materialistic and based on the superiority of the white man, that existed and still continues to exist. Perhaps it is for all of these reasons that Klaue is such an iconic villain, reminding us of many of the things that are wrong with or upon which the world we live in is based.
